The word Vaastu or Vastu means ‘dwelling’ in Sanskrit and the ancient science of buildings is known as Vaastu Shastra or Vastu Shastra.
It tells you how you should construct an enclosure or a building whether it is a temple, house, shop, office, factory or godown so that the forces of nature help you to live in peace with prosperity. In other words it tells you how to live in harmony with the forces of nature that are acting on you in your dwelling place.
Hindu mythology has it that Vaastu Purusha was born of Lord Shiva’s sweat when he fought the deadly demon Andhakasura. Vaastu Purusha himself became uncontrollable and destructive and the heavenly gods finally subjugated him and brought him down on earth with face down, with his face in the Northeast and his feet in the Southwest. 45 deities stayed there, 32 of them in the outer enclosure and 13 of them in the inner enclosure holding him in place at various points or locations on his body.
Given below is the picture of Vaastu Purusha and Vaastu Mandala, the site of construction with the various Gods in position on the site:
One legend has it that Vaastu Purusha is just the son of Mother Earth who is sleeping on ground face down with his head in the North East and feet in the South West and that he gets up on a few days a year and one should do Bhoomi Puja only on these days mentioned in the hindu panchang or almanac.
It is also said that Brahma the creator gave this shastra to Vishwakarma, the celestial architect and commanded that he should build only according to this shastra.
Vaastu Shastra is holistic and all encompassing. It includes Bhoomi (site ) Vaastu, Building Vaastu, Furniture and other articles Vaastu, Vehicle Vaastu etc.etc.
Vaastu is the science of direction and architecture that combines all the five elements of nature, the pancha maha bhootas, Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space, and balances them with the man and material.
Vaastu Purusha Mandala is the space of construction occupied by the Vaastu Purusha.
This mandala is divided into 64 square grid for temples and shrines and 81 square grid for residences.
Even though the above picture gives the location of all the gods
The principal gods in the grid are the lords of the eight directions as follows:
Northeast – Eashanya – Eashwara, Lord Shiva ( Religions, luck, faith )
East – Aditya, Sun God ( Seeing the world )
Southeast – Agni, Lord of Fire ( Energy generating )
South – Yama, Lord of Death ( Destructive )
Southwest – Pitru, Nairutya, Niruthi, Kanni – Lord of Ancestors, ( History )
West – Varuna , Lord of Water ( Physical )
Northwest – Vayu, Lord of Winds ( Advertisement, Expenses )
North – Kubera, Lord of Wealth ( Finance )
Center – Brahma, The Creator Lord of the Universe
The philosophy of Vaastu Shastra in building construction is simple – locate the various rooms in the proper places in harmony with the lords ruling the directions.
Choice of Site:
For an individual house or building it all begins with the choice of site.
Here are some simple rules for the choice of site:
1. You should always move towards north or east or anywhere between north and east.
This will improve your life. If you move south or west or anywhere between south or west go for higher altitude than your present dwelling place. Suppose you are living in ground floor go to first floor. So choose your site preferably in northerly or easterly direction.
2.The site should not have been a burial ground or a cremation ground.
3.The site should be of even height in all directions or the surface elevation should be as per the figure shown below: This is to balance the earth’s topographical higher elevation of the North than the South and the East than the West and the rotation of the earth from West to East. It should be borne in mind that the building should also be constructed with this difference in elevation in mind and as per the location of rooms as mentioned below:
LORD OF THE WINDS
GOD OF WEALTH
ALMIGHTY GOD SHIVA
LORD OF THE WATERS
ADITYA, SUN GOD
LORD OF DEATH
LORD OF FIRE
3.Choose a site that has a regular shape like a square or rectangle. If it is a four or more sided site measure the diagonal connecting the Southwest and Northeast. This should be longer than the diagonal connecting the Southeast and Northwest.
4.The site can face any direction. Construct the building according to the illustration given above.
